Cinnamon For Cholesterol
How to Use Cinnamon for Cholesterol
Managing your cholesterol levels is incredibly important to your overall health. Much like elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol can be thought of as a silent killer. You may experience no signs or symptoms of high cholesterol, but if elevated levels of cholesterol are in your veins you are at risk of a variety of serious, life threatening health conditions, including stroke and heart attack. Many treatments are available to reduce your cholesterol levels. If you prefer to take a natural approach to your healthcare, you may wish to consider using cinnamon for cholesterol management.
The first step to using cinnamon for cholesterol management is to meet with your doctor. Have your doctor perform blood work to determine your levels of high density lipids, low density lipids and your total cholesterol. All three of these lab values are important in deciding how to best treat your high cholesterol. If your total cholesterol and high density lipids -- also called HDL or "good cholesterol" -- are both elevated but your low density lipids – also called LDL or “bad cholesterol” – are low, the course of action will be different than if your total cholesterol and LDL are high but your HDL is low.
Discuss your preference of treating your high cholesterol levels naturally with your doctor. Mention that you want to use cinnamon for cholesterol management and ask for your doctor’s advice. Your doctor will tell you how much cinnamon to take and how frequently you should take it. The typical dose is 1,000 mg of cinnamon once per day, but your dose and frequency may be different based upon your personal needs and health history. Your doctor may also suggest you make some diet and exercise changes, such as increasing your weekly exercise and decreasing your consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat.
Take cinnamon for cholesterol management as directed by your physician. It is important that you do this even if you don’t feel any differences right away and even if initial blood work does not show a significant change in your cholesterol levels. It can take four to six weeks of consistent use of cinnamon for cholesterol management before your cholesterol levels will dramatically reduce. Some people need a little bit longer for their cholesterol levels to come down and others see a dramatic improvement much faster. Whatever the case is for you, continue to take the cinnamon until your doctor advises otherwise.
